FAQ
Getting started
What does Headline do?+
You add people from LinkedIn with one click. Headline finds what you have in common, writes your intro email, puts it in your Gmail or Outlook drafts, tracks everyone in one place, and reminds you when it's time to follow up.
How do I set it up?+
Fill in your Profile (school, other schools, clubs, hometown, and your resume). Install the browser extension, then on the Profile page click Connect Extension → Generate codeand enter that code in the extension’s popup. After that, open any LinkedIn profile, click the Headline icon in your browser toolbar, and click Add to Headline.
Which browsers work?+
Chrome and Microsoft Edge on a computer. The website works anywhere, but adding people from LinkedIn needs the extension.
Emails
Does Headline send emails for me?+
Never. Drafts go into your Drafts folder in Gmail or Outlook. You read, edit and send every email yourself.
Where's my draft?+
In the Drafts folder of whichever mail app you chose on your Profile page. You need to be signed in to that mail account in the same browser. The extension's popup shows whether the latest draft worked, with a Retry button if it didn't.
Why does a small Outlook window pop up?+
Outlook only saves drafts reliably from a window that's open, so Headline opens a small one, fills in the draft, and closes it once Outlook says the draft is saved. Leave it alone for a few seconds and it closes on its own. Gmail works inside the tab you already have open.
How does Headline know someone's email address?+
It guesses from the firm's usual format (like first.last@firm.com) and the person's name. It's a guess, not a verified address — double-check it before sending, especially for people who go by a shortened name (a "Matt" is often matthew.smith@ at work). If Headline doesn't know a firm's format, the To field says "Email not found" and you'll need to fill it in.
Is my resume attached?+
Yes, if you've uploaded one on your Profile page. It's attached to the drafts Headline puts in Gmail or Outlook, under the file name you uploaded. If it ever can't be attached, the extension's popup tells you to add it by hand.
Finding what you have in common
What counts as something in common?+
The same club or organization, another school you went to (like your high school), or your hometown — matched against what's actually on their LinkedIn profile. Headline never makes up a connection. If there's nothing in common, it uses your cold template instead.
Why doesn't it mention that we go to the same university?+
Your email already says where you go to school, so repeating it isn't much of a hook. If you share a university, Headline looks for something specific they did there instead, like an honors program they were in.
Why should I rank my clubs?+
When someone shares several clubs with you, the email leads with the one highest on your list. Put the smallest, most selective groups first — a shared small club is a stronger connection than a big one.
My club goes by an abbreviation on LinkedIn.+
On your Profile page, click "Goes by an abbreviation on LinkedIn?" next to that club and type the abbreviation. Headline will match it, but your email still uses the full name.
Templates
Can I write my own templates?+
Yes, on the Templates page. Pick a type, edit the wording, and use the buttons to drop in the parts that change per person (their name, firm, and what you have in common). The preview shows how it will read.
What happens if I have several templates for one type?+
Drafts take turns using each one, so your emails don't all read the same.
What's the difference between warm and cold?+
Only intro emails have both. Warm is used when you have something in common with the person, cold when you don't.
Plans and your data
Is it free?+
Your first 3 people are free, no card needed. After that it’s $4.99 a month or $24.99 for a 6-month season. See plans.
Is my data private?+
Yes. Only your account can see your contacts, notes and drafts, and we never sell your data. The privacy page has the details.
How do I delete my account?+
At the bottom of the Profile page, click “Delete my account.” It removes your account and everything in it, and cancels a monthly plan. To remove just one person, use “Delete contact” at the bottom of their page.
Something's broken, or I have an idea.+
